Musical Chairs with Paper Plates
Classic musical chairs with zero chairs. Plates get passed above heads while the music plays, and whoever is empty-handed when it stops is out. Works in a classroom, a gym, or a living room.
Setup
- Have players stand or sit in a circle.
- Hand out plates so there is always one fewer plate than players.
- Explain that plates only move above the head, never in front.
How to Play
- Start the music. Players pass the plates around the circle above their heads.
- Stop the music. Passing freezes instantly. Whoever isn’t holding a plate over their head is out.
- Remove a plate. Take one plate out of play so the count stays one short.
- Last one standing. Keep going until one player is left holding the final plate.
Say Something Like
“This is musical chairs, but we’re not moving, the plates are. Keep them going around above your heads while the music plays. When it stops, freeze. No plate over your head means you’re out. Music, please!”
Variations
- Reverse!: Call “reverse” mid-song and plates change direction.
- Two Circles: Split big groups into two circles and have the winners face off.
- Rip-Off Round: Plates tend to get ripped. Any plate torn in half is out of play along with the person holding it.
Discipleship Teaching Points
The plates keep moving, and so should we. Use it to talk about passing along what we’ve been given instead of holding on for ourselves. Reference: 2 Timothy 2:2.
Secular Teaching Points
Listening skills, quick reactions, and a group game that scales from five players to fifty with no chairs to move.
