10+ Players 👥
7-10 Minutes ⏱️
Chairs (one per player, arranged in a circle)
Open space for movement
Arrange chairs in a circle, all facing inward.
Have all players sit in a chair.
Assign each player a fruit name (apple, banana, orange, grape, etc.).
Repeat fruit names so that multiple players share the same fruit.
If you have a smaller group, use less fruit varieties so that you can have multiple players share the same fruit.
Start with one player standing in the middle of the circle (they won’t have a chair).
Call a fruit name: The middle player yells a fruit (e.g., “Apples!”).
Everyone with that fruit must get up and find a new seat.
The middle player also tries to grab an empty seat.
One player will be left without a seat—they become the new middle player.
Call "Fruit Basket Upset!" to make everyone get up and find a new seat.
Add a rule: Players cannot sit in the seat they just left or the seats immediately next to it (optional for more challenge).
Play continues with the new middle player calling the next fruit.
Say Something Like
"Welcome to Fruit Basket Upset! Each of you has been assigned a fruit—remember yours! When your fruit is called, you must get up and find a new seat. You cannot return to your original seat or the seats immediately next to it. If 'Fruit Basket Upset!' is called, everyone must move! The person left standing calls the next fruit. Ready? Let’s begin with...Bananas!"
Variations
Category Switch: Use animals, colors, or sports teams instead of fruits.
Action Addition: Add a quick action (like hopping in place or clapping) before finding a new seat.
Elimination Style: Remove one chair each round to increase competition.
Question Version: The middle player asks a yes/no question (e.g., “Who has a dog?”), and everyone who answers yes must move.
Teaching Points
This game encourages quick thinking, listening, and movement while reinforcing the value of inclusion and being alert—great for starting conversations about unity, being ready to serve, or responding when called.
